Free Year 5 NAPLAN Reading practice
Thirty-nine questions in 50 minutes across six or seven texts.
Last updated: 5 October 2026
Same questions as Year 3, five more minutes
That is not a typo, and it tells you exactly what has changed. The Year 5 paper has the same number of questions as Year 3 but gives five more minutes.
The extra time is not for more questions. It is for longer, denser texts and questions that take longer to answer: the ones where the answer has to be worked out rather than located.
What gets harder
More of the questions ask for inference: what the text implies rather than what it says. More ask about the writer's choices. Why this word, why this order, and what effect does it have?
Some pathways also include a pair of texts on the same subject, with questions about how they differ. That comparison task barely exists in primary classrooms, and it is one of the clearest separators at this level.
Where marks go
- Inference questions with no matching words in the text to scan for
- Author's-purpose questions, where all four options describe something the text does and only one is the main thing
- Comparison across two texts, as above
- Vocabulary where every option is a real meaning of the word and only one fits this sentence
How our practice differs from the real test
The real test branches between testlets depending on how a student is going. Our papers cover the same content and difficulty spread in a single pass.
We don't offer NAPLAN Writing. It's marked by a human against a criteria rubric, and we won't pretend to do that automatically.
How much practice is enough
Two or three full papers. Beyond that, the highest-value habit is narrow. When reviewing, ask your child where in the text the answer came from. If they cannot point at it, they guessed, and that count is the thing to work on, not the score.
Common questions
How long is the Year 5 NAPLAN Reading test?
Thirty-nine questions in 50 minutes.
What are paired texts?
Two short texts on the same subject, with questions about how they differ. Some Year 5 pathways include a pair, and they become common in Year 7.

Practise free, no account needed. Every paper is marked the moment your child finishes, with a worked solution on every question.
Free practice draws from a limited set of questions, so some will repeat. Subscribers get the full question bank and fewer repeats.
