Free Year 7 NAPLAN Reading practice

Forty-eight questions in 65 minutes, across around nine text sets. That is noticeably more texts than primary, and the switching between them is part of the difficulty.

What changes from primary

The texts get longer and more varied. Informative, imaginative and persuasive writing appear in roughly equal measure at this level, where primary papers leaned on narrative.

More importantly, the questions move from content to craft. Not just what the text says, but who it was written for, what the writer was trying to achieve, and how the writing works to achieve it. Text pairs, two pieces on the same subject with questions comparing them, become common.

Where marks go

  • Purpose and audience questions, where all four options describe something the text arguably does
  • Comparison across paired texts, which requires holding two structures in mind at once
  • Technique questions. Naming the device is the easy half. Saying what it does to the reader is the half being marked.
  • Switching cost. Nine text sets in 65 minutes means re-orienting nine times, and accuracy tends to sag in the middle.

How our practice differs from the real test

The real test branches between testlets depending on how a student is going. Our papers cover the same content and difficulty spread in a single pass.

We don't offer NAPLAN Writing. It's marked by a human against a criteria rubric, and we won't pretend to do that automatically.

How much practice is enough

Two or three full papers. The habit worth more than extra papers is this: take any opinion piece and ask two questions. What does the writer want me to think, and which sentence is doing the most work to get me there? That is most of what this paper tests.

Common questions

How long is the Year 7 NAPLAN Reading test?
Forty-eight questions in 65 minutes.

How long should my child spend on each text set?
About seven minutes, if the 65 minutes are spread evenly across nine sets. Paired texts take longer, so it pays to move on from a single short text quickly.

Year 7 also sits: Numeracy · Conventions of Language

Practise free, no account needed. Every paper is marked the moment your child finishes, with a worked solution on every question.

Free practice draws from a limited set of questions, so some will repeat. Subscribers get the full question bank and fewer repeats.
