Free Year 9 NAPLAN Reading practice
Forty-eight questions in 65 minutes across around nine text sets. That is the same size as Year 7, with the demand moved up rather than out.

What makes it harder
How much of the answer rests on one word. Year 9 questions often turn on a single adverb, one choice of verb, or a shift in tone halfway through a paragraph. The four options are often all defensible readings of the text as a whole. The right one is supported by that specific detail.
The second change is evaluation. Earlier papers ask what a text does. Year 9 asks whether it does it well, which of two texts is more convincing, or what a writer has chosen to leave out.
Where marks go
- Single-detail questions, as above. Answering from the general sense of the passage is an easy way to lose them.
- Omission: what the text does not say, and why that matters
- Evaluating an argument rather than summarising it
- Tone shifts, where the passage changes stance midway and the question is about the change
How our practice differs from the real test
The real test branches between testlets depending on how a student is going. Our papers cover the same content and difficulty spread in a single pass.
We don't offer NAPLAN Writing. It's marked by a human against a criteria rubric, and we won't pretend to do that automatically.
How much practice is enough
Two or three full papers, plus one review habit worth more than any of them. When an answer is wrong, find the exact words in the text that rule out the option your child chose. Not "why is C right" but "which three words make B wrong". That is the standard this paper is written to.
Common questions
How long is the Year 9 NAPLAN Reading test?
Forty-eight questions in 65 minutes.
What makes Year 9 Reading harder?
Not vocabulary so much as stance. The questions ask what a writer is doing with a text, and how two texts differ in their position, rather than what either one says.

Practise free, no account needed. Every paper is marked the moment your child finishes, with a worked solution on every question.
Free practice draws from a limited set of questions, so some will repeat. Subscribers get the full question bank and fewer repeats.
